SEO timing calculator

How long does SEO take to work?

SEO usually builds rather than switching on at once, so timing changes the break-even math. If you pay during months with no new customers, the remaining active months must work harder. Enter the expected wait to see the pace needed and your largest cash gap before payback.

$12,000 total cost ÷ $200 kept per customer = 60 customers, spread across 9 active months.

What if your close rate changes?

At 5 out of 20, you need 27 leads a month. At 9 out of 20, you need 15.

The practical view

What are you actually paying for?

Early SEO months often focus on research, site fixes, content, and earning visibility. The calculator does not assume a standard timeline. It uses the expectation your provider gives you.

Example: a one-year agreement where results start after month three. Change any number in the calculator to replace the example with your business.

Build the real total

Costs to include

Include every payment made during the waiting period, plus content, development, and internal review time. Those early costs create the cash gap the later results must repay.

Before you sign

Contract checks

Write down the expected ramp-up, the work due during it, and a reassessment date. Avoid treating a precise ranking date as guaranteed customer growth.

What the number means

A longer wait does not automatically make SEO bad, but it raises the monthly customer target after results begin and increases the cash you must carry before payback.

Red flags

  • A precise result date presented as a guarantee
  • No explanation of work during the waiting period
  • No plan to connect visibility to customers

Questions to ask

  • What should be completed before leads grow?
  • What early signs will you report?
  • When should we reassess the plan?

How to tell if it is working

Keep the original break-even plan, then return after a few months and enter actual customers in the pace check.
